Submitting and Storing Assignments

The FSU Blackboard system provides convenient tools for submitting assinment files for grading and storing unfinshed assignment files on FSU servers for retreival from any Internet-connected computer. It is important that students understand the difference between using the Save and Submit buttons. It is also important that students understand the full procedure for submitting files for grading and confirming that the assignment file is submitted correctly.

Instructions for SUBMITTING assignment files

Note: Submitted files will be graded. Once submitted, they cannot be retrieved or edited.

  1. Make sure that the file you wish to submit is save and closed --you cannot submit a file that is open in an application.
  2. Click the ">> View/Complete Assignment:" link associated with the assignment you wish to submit
  3. You must type something in the comments box. A simple "hello" is fine.
  4. Use the Browse button to find and select the file you wish to submit.
  5. Use the SUBMIT button --NOT THE SAVE BUTTON, to submit your file for grading.
  6. WAIT until you receive a message stating that your assignment was successfully updated. If you close the browser window before receiving the confirmation, your submitted file will become corrupt.
  7. Confirm that your assignment was submitted in tact by clicking "Assignments" on the menu, clicking the link to open the submission form, clicking OK to review your results, and clicking the link to your assignment file and confirming that it opens without a problem.
  8. Please note that a "!" appearing as an assignment grade indicates that the assignment has not yet been graded. Assignments will be graded within one week of submission.

Instructions for SAVING assignment files

Note: Saved files will NOT be graded. The are stored on FSU's server for you to access and work on.

If you are not done with your assignment but wish to save your work on FSU's server to be accessed from any Internet-connected computer, you can use the SAVE button. To retrieve your SAVED file, just go back to the form and click the link to it, when prompted to Open or Save the file, SAVE IT, then open it with the appropriate application. If you choose Open rather than Save, the file will not be properly stored on your current PC and will not submit correctly. To store your edited file back on the server, simply begin the instructions in this paragraph again from the beginning.

If working on your own PC, you may, of course, simply save your file on your own PC. You should not, however, save homework files on PCs that are used by other students in the class!
